The Biomedical Engineering Department at Florida International University Presents

The 9th International Conference on Ethics in Biology, Engineering and Medicine – April 14th and 15th 2018.

Call for abstracts is now open. For details see the Call for Abstracts Flyer.

Deadline for abstract submission is November 15th 2017.

The incredible pace of discovery in biotechnology and medicine has the potential to revolutionize society and the way we live. These advances have increased lifespan, irradiated disease, created highly-targeted therapies for once intractable diseases, and improved quality of life for people around the world. However, these new technologies and biomedical engineering strategies also raise fundamental ethical issues.

Scientific progress in this area will challenge our notions of personal identity, equitable distribution of health resources, the acceptability of eliminating a species to prevent disease transmission, the distinction between human treatment and enhancement, rights to genetic privacy and genetic non-discrimination, free will, standard methods of clinical and pre-clinical research, and much more. It is essential that we consider the ethical ramifications of these developments and present warnings and policy recommendations before their inevitable arrival into mainstream life. We welcome speakers on all topics related to ethical concerns and policy related issues as scientists, engineers, physicians and philosophers make new advances in biology, engineering and medicine.
